Our Full Day Kindergarten provides an enriched environment for children designed to benefit their social, emotional, physical and cognitive development. Our class sizes allow for each student to reach their full potential.
Language Arts: Kindergarten balanced literacy includes both whole and small group instruction beginning with letter/sound recognition and extending to written expression. Leveled guiding reading groups are formed to cover: directionality, making predictions, using picture clues, decoding, comprehension and sequencing. Literacy based lessons in reading are designed to aid in identifying and utilizing story elements to further enhance comprehension. Book talks and discussions help in oral expression, the sharing of ideas and jumping off point for written responses.
Mathematics: Meeting the individual needs of students, each concept area begins with a diagnostic pre test and each lesson includes hands on experience and demonstration. Kindergarten begins with a review of sorting, patterns, shapes and numbers. It then progresses to application as we form tables, graphs, collect and compare data. With the use of manipulatives, our kindergarteners are introduced to addition and subtraction. Students then explore: time, money and measurement. An intro to simple fractions completes the curriculum.
Science: Students will perform activities and conduct experiments designed to formally introduce them to the process of scientific investigation, common science tools, and the properties of objects. They will be introduced to the concept of using numbers when making and recording observations in the lab and when analyzing results from experiments. Students will learn to identify properties such as color, texture, smell and sound to complete their observations. Models, symbols and measurements used in the lab will be explored. In addition, they will have an opportunity to follow a specific sequence of steps in an experiment in order to obtain a specific result.
Kindergarteners will also have Spanish, Music, Art, Physical Education, Technology and Library as part of their weekly schedule.
